Literacy Graduation for Class 5
The day we returned from Madang we found out that the literacy class had finished their last class a few days earlier and just wanted to wait for us to arrive before doing the graduation ceremony! I am so proud of these teachers and these students. They worked hard and have now learned how to read and write all the sounds in the Do language.
The ceremony was completely planned out by the students, using the pattern of the previous classes. The singing was accompanied by the ladies who are in the reading class, which was so sweet to see.

The students told a short story in Do, each reading one line, to demonstrate their new skills.

Namu (teacher), me, Josep (assistant teacher), and Maikepe (teacher):

Eki and Zach spoke to the students and those watching, explaining the importance of literacy to be able to access God's Word:

Each student received a certificate of completion:

Eight of the men in the class were from villages outside of Mawerero. They left their homes each week to live here so that they could learn to read in Do and bring literacy back to their own village! I have come to hold all these students so dear over the course of the last 3 months as I have assisted the teachers and helped in the classroom twice a week.

We are thankful to the Lord that more people are learning to read, so they can read His Word in their own language!
