50th Independence Day
On the 16th, PNG celebrated 50 years of independence! There were big celebrations all over the country. In our village, they had a flag raising ceremony at the school to start off the week. Then there were basketball and soccer tournaments, dart games and lots of food.

All the kids dressed up:

We bought an otter pop at the market next to the festivities. Of course, with no refrigeration they are just bags of juice!

Up at the main village is where the basketball tournament took place:

The week was so so SUNNY. These girls played all day, in the sun, most of them barefoot. They are tough ladies!
Peek-a-boo with Ellie:

With the holiday, many people have family visiting from other villages. Ruben here was sitting at his house, next to the basketball game, working on milling rice for a big meal with his grandkids.

Ellie with a cool grandma, Mananuwe:

We also got to enjoy a package from a faithful friend and supporter in Arizona!

If you receive our email updates, you would have heard that there has been a man with mental issues who has been causing disruptions. To give you all an update on him: his behavior had calmed down for the last couple weeks, but it seems like this morning he is beginning to have another episode. Please pray for the village leaders to lead well with courage and wisdom in this situation!
