Build Trip 7

Cassidy • December 6, 2023

The day before Thanksgiving, Zach, Bryan, and Kombuk returned - thank you for praying! This morning they all left again for the 7th trip. So here is an update on trip 6, what we have been up to in the interim, and what they hope to do on trip 7. On build trip 6, Bryan finished all the posts for our new house:

Kombuk helped with the posts (he is there in the background of the picture above), and also worked on building another storage shed.

One thing the guys needed to do was move all electrical to the new office. They were still relying on the Mitchell's old house for powering the internet, charging power tools, and running the freezer. When they tried to pull up the old satellite cable and run the internet to the office, it didn't work. They tried for awhile to fix it and patch it together, but in the end they just had to return it to the old house and put in an order for new cable to come in next time. (Honorable mention to Mac from PBT fielding calls to try to walk Zach through splicing wires together. :)) Here is Zach trying to make it work:

If you have ever had to move houses, you know that after packing necessities and then non-necessities you get to a point where you wonder why you have so much stuff. There are cotton balls, and old files, and cleaning supplies, and kids crafts, and so on... We have felt that way ever since the houses fell and it is still the theme of much of each of these trips. Zach spends so much time cleaning out belongings and trash and furniture and old things and new things and electronics... so that kept him busy on this trip and there is still a lot to do. They got many many things out of the Mitchells' (our things and their things) and they all also began the process of gutting the home. Here is the kitchen after all the upper and free-standing cabinets were removed:

Zach asked to preach at their service on the Sunday they were there. (See the title pic above and another here.) He was thankful to be able to share the gospel with everyone again and afterward had a couple encouraging follow up conversations.

Flying out. This is Zach, Kombuk, and our neighbor in the village: Fainuwo. He has been sick, so we were glad he could catch a ride to Madang to go to the hospital.

Thankful to have Daddy back.

In the two weeks while home, we got back into a normal routine and celebrated Thanksgiving and Annie's birthday. Reading the Bible with an infant:

Thanksgiving meal with the Twomblys.

Keeping a two year old (see her birthday post here - https://cannsofclay.com/annie-s-two) busy:

Everyone trying to stay cool:

Growing up:

We decorated for Christmas and started our advent activities. Here is a picture of our Christmas music dance party.

This morning we said goodbye and the guys left for the 7th build trip. Goodbye to the girls:

(See if you can find two boys in this photo):

Last hugs:

During this next week, the men would really like to completely tear down the last house. In order for that to happen, the last pieces of furniture and bins etc... need to be cleared out and stored, the rest of the cabinets need to be removed and packed, then the solar panels and wires, etc... need to be removed, and then the whole structure will be torn down from the roof down. After the floor is removed, there will also be the task of sorting through whatever personal items have been pinned under the house... and dealing with all the bees under there. Yes, bees. They have moved into the small spaces and taken over it would seem.

Juli died yesterday. The news came to us through Bangena and her young daughter on our steps. “Juli died and her brothers are trying to hurt her husband. They are hiding him there in the Counsel’s house," they said, pointing to our next-door neighbor’s hut. So many people were shocked. “How could she be dead? She wasn’t sick. I saw her just a couple days ago…!” Eventually we learned that Juli had hemorrhaged all night and had died in the morning. A brand new baby, miscarried, and they could not stop the bleeding. Juli has seven children close in age (the youngest was still nursing). Her parents knew that children so close together can cause complications, so a while back they told Samuel to stop getting his wife pregnant. Samuel agreed and promised his wife she wouldn't have any more kids, but it was a promise he couldn't keep.

As you may have read in email updates and other posts, we have new teammates - Josh and Autumn Miller! We are so thankful to the Lord for giving this sweet couple a desire to serve the Lord here among the Do people. They have been working since July to turn our previous office into their new home! Josh and Kombuk (our Madang carpenter friend) have flown in every couple weeks to work. A close family friend Johnathan is also here helping with the build. He flew out from the states in August and is staying here in PNG until the house is done! Johnathan has stayed in the village even between trips to keep working, which has been sweet for our family as we have been able to get to know him.

On the 16th, PNG celebrated 50 years of independence! There were big celebrations all over the country. In our village, they had a flag raising ceremony at the school to start off the week. Then there were basketball and soccer tournaments, dart games and lots of food. Hiking down to the school:

On Monday, a new literacy class began! Our literacy teachers, Maikepe and Namura, have been gathering names and school fees for a year, but interest here was low. Once some men from a nearby village decided to join, interest (there and here!) spiked and we have an overflowing classroom. Sewing to bind four more literacy books to account for the extra students:

JAARS trains and sends pilots over here - we are thankful for them!

We were able to fly up to the highlands to take a break at SIL's mission base (called Ukarumpa). We wanted to rest, see doctors, connect with coworkers, and give the boys time with friends.

Zach and I put together a video for our church's Sunday school hour. The first small part explains how we keep ourselves supplied and the rest of it is how Zach handles foreign concepts in translation. If you have an hour and want to know more about the work here, see the video below:

Our littlest Ellie turned two! We love this little girl and thank God for completing our family with her. We can see her beginning to grow A BIT in independence and contentment as she matures and is able to communicate. She has lots of words, giggles often at Annie's silliness, loves rice, and (as a last born) is usually just along for the ride. She is happy to write in the dirt or play on the rope swing, look at books on the couch or look out the window in a hut, but if anything goes wrong, she just wants her mama. It is sweet to see how good the boys are with her, and Annie is a good big sister, too! (Though Annie DID have a good cry a few days ago when she realized she wasn't going to get any presents on Ellie's birthday 😉)

After celebrating Jude's birthday, we had a pretty low-key April and Easter. Zach has been faithfully preaching through Ephesians, and there have been good opportunities to follow up with people afterward.

The boy that made us parents turned 13 on Friday! This boy is growing up! He has always been an analyst, but now he is thinking big thoughts about future plans and budgets. He has always been conscious of the feelings of others, but he is now taking more initiative to step up and handle things for others.
