Back in the Village (+ Annie is Eight Months)

Cassidy • July 25, 2022

We have officially made it back to our village home. These last five days have been full of lots of work as we settle back into life here. I honestly don't even know what to write here. I could spend the blog talking about our coworkers, the Mitchells... how our whole way here was smoothed by them being in country before us, leaving food and gifts for us in Madang, cleaning our house up here in the village. And how, our transition back into the village has been so much easier this time because we had coworkers here. So any of our friends here in Mawerero who had a request, a spiritual question, etc... weren't waiting for our return. And how much better (infinitely better) it is to have fellowship with like-minded teammates than to come back on our own.

There is much to tell about the status of the work here, as well. Most obvious right now is the ongoing literacy program. While both of our families were gone, the local literacy teachers started and finished the third literacy class. Then, right before our return, the fourth literacy class was completed. I am SO proud of these guys for teaching faithfully! They waited for our return last week to do the fourth graduation ceremony and it was very sweet to hear one of the teachers, Namura, speak about how thankful he is that he gets to be a part of teaching literacy to his village.

The last significant aspect of our return that I'll mention is bringing a baby back!

All the people, especially the ladies here, were very excited to meet little Annie. Attention was most acute when we landed off the heli and has slowly waned, but seemingly everyone wants to hold and squeeze Annie, and she wants to be held and squeezed by almost no one. So Annie has spent more than usual of her last five days yelling.

In Annie news, she also turned 8 months yesterday. Gone are the days of bows and even pants and here are the days of big cloth diapers and sturdy clothes.

Her eighth month has been a big one. First international flight, first heli flight, and a move to a new house in a new climate in a new country with all new faces.

No crying on the heli = win.

Squeezing in a nap on the way.

No one can believe how fat her legs are.

First time sitting with someone without crying. Might have to do with the fact that Mananuwe didn't run away with her or pinch her... :)

I'll end here with a quick update on Jude and Oliver! These boys have been very happy to be back at their home. A big part of that is due to the Mitchells' kids with whom they have played for hours each day since returning. They also have found all their old toys, like the army men pictured above, and their legos. They are eager for us to get back to all our schedules here (When is family movie night? It is Friday, why aren't we having pancakes?), but I am a little too busy for now to commit to any of that for probably the next two weeks. But I LOVE that they love the routine here and that this home is comfortable for them... after leaving the US with all its desserts and amusements.

We must write another post soon on more aspects of the work and relationships here, but for now I will just say that we are so thankful to be back home and back to work!

Juli died yesterday. The news came to us through Bangena and her young daughter on our steps. “Juli died and her brothers are trying to hurt her husband. They are hiding him there in the Counsel’s house," they said, pointing to our next-door neighbor’s hut. So many people were shocked. “How could she be dead? She wasn’t sick. I saw her just a couple days ago…!” Eventually we learned that Juli had hemorrhaged all night and had died in the morning. A brand new baby, miscarried, and they could not stop the bleeding. Juli has seven children close in age (the youngest was still nursing). Her parents knew that children so close together can cause complications, so a while back they told Samuel to stop getting his wife pregnant. Samuel agreed and promised his wife she wouldn't have any more kids, but it was a promise he couldn't keep.

As you may have read in email updates and other posts, we have new teammates - Josh and Autumn Miller! We are so thankful to the Lord for giving this sweet couple a desire to serve the Lord here among the Do people. They have been working since July to turn our previous office into their new home! Josh and Kombuk (our Madang carpenter friend) have flown in every couple weeks to work. A close family friend Johnathan is also here helping with the build. He flew out from the states in August and is staying here in PNG until the house is done! Johnathan has stayed in the village even between trips to keep working, which has been sweet for our family as we have been able to get to know him.

On the 16th, PNG celebrated 50 years of independence! There were big celebrations all over the country. In our village, they had a flag raising ceremony at the school to start off the week. Then there were basketball and soccer tournaments, dart games and lots of food. Hiking down to the school:

On Monday, a new literacy class began! Our literacy teachers, Maikepe and Namura, have been gathering names and school fees for a year, but interest here was low. Once some men from a nearby village decided to join, interest (there and here!) spiked and we have an overflowing classroom. Sewing to bind four more literacy books to account for the extra students:

JAARS trains and sends pilots over here - we are thankful for them!

We were able to fly up to the highlands to take a break at SIL's mission base (called Ukarumpa). We wanted to rest, see doctors, connect with coworkers, and give the boys time with friends.

Zach and I put together a video for our church's Sunday school hour. The first small part explains how we keep ourselves supplied and the rest of it is how Zach handles foreign concepts in translation. If you have an hour and want to know more about the work here, see the video below:

Our littlest Ellie turned two! We love this little girl and thank God for completing our family with her. We can see her beginning to grow A BIT in independence and contentment as she matures and is able to communicate. She has lots of words, giggles often at Annie's silliness, loves rice, and (as a last born) is usually just along for the ride. She is happy to write in the dirt or play on the rope swing, look at books on the couch or look out the window in a hut, but if anything goes wrong, she just wants her mama. It is sweet to see how good the boys are with her, and Annie is a good big sister, too! (Though Annie DID have a good cry a few days ago when she realized she wasn't going to get any presents on Ellie's birthday 😉)

After celebrating Jude's birthday, we had a pretty low-key April and Easter. Zach has been faithfully preaching through Ephesians, and there have been good opportunities to follow up with people afterward.

The boy that made us parents turned 13 on Friday! This boy is growing up! He has always been an analyst, but now he is thinking big thoughts about future plans and budgets. He has always been conscious of the feelings of others, but he is now taking more initiative to step up and handle things for others.
